It's My Party...I'll Wine If I Want Too.

People are either very comfortable with the subject of wine and wine tasting, already knowing their what their preference before they ever walk through the door - or they have no clue.

If you have never been wine tasting and are not quite sure about the whole process, these 11 Tips will help you get started.

Wine Tip 1) Learn some wine vocabulary

For example, most people have never heard of a "Wine Flight."

A wine flight is just a sequence of wines. The series could include all red wines, all white, or a combination of both.

Wine Tip 2) Do a bit of winery reconnaissance

If you're going to do a whole wine tour, take a little bit of time to check out so websites of the wineries you'll be visiting to make sure you'll be visiting wineries that produce wines in a style that you like or are at least of interest to you.

We recommend that you visit maybe three or four wineries in one day because those tastes of wine prices can start adding up quickly - not to mention your blood alcohol level (remember to drink responsibly.

Wine Tip 3) Wine glasses are meant to be held by their stem

The reasons you should always hold wine glasses by the stem is so your not heating up the wine by holding the bowl and also to keep from getting smudgy fingerprints all over the glass.

Tasting wine, believe it or not, actually begins with you looking at it - you taste with your eyes first, so you want to be
able to see the color.

Wine Tip 4) The Swirl

It's important to understand that while wine glasses may feel smooth, they actually have little imperfections in the glass the reason being, so when you're swirling, you're releasing the aromatics in the wine.

If you're not comfortable with swirling while the glass is in your hand, you can put it on the table and give it a little swirl that way.

Having the glass on the table while swirling will help keep all the wine from sloshing and possibly spilling out.

Wine Tip 5) The Sniff

You want to make sure to smell your wine before and after you swirl it. By sniffing the wine before you swirl it and then again afterward, you can compare how much more open the aromas have become.

Wine Tip 6) The Sip

When you're in the sipping phase, please don't be surprised if someone around you then spits the wine out.

It's not that the wine is foul in any way - it's just what more experienced wine tasters do - it helps you taste more wines throughout the day as well as helps you to identify more of the flavors of the wine.

Wine Tip 7) Made with grapes, all grapes, and nothing but grapes

A real winery will never add any weird, funky things to the wines,

So if someone tells you that this wine has aromas of pear and apricot and melon those are just flavors and aromas that naturally exist within the grapes themselves.

Wine Tip 8) Cleanse your palate

A recommendation is that you not chew gum right before going to a wine tasting.

In general, you want to make sure that you don't compromise your tongue palate with external things like sugar, or salt.

Wine Tip 9) Remain open-minded

Life is always more enjoyable when you keep an open mind, and this holds true in wine tasting. Be open to the different wines because you never know when you're going to find something that you like.

A "taste" is only a little 1 oz - 1.5 oz taste and wineries certainly are not going to be offended if you don't taste the entire wine sample.

Wine Tip 10) Ask questions

Asking some questions, say for example, about the grapes and
where they came from; asking
about the soil types, etc. are all questions that anybody winery professional should be ready to answer.

Wine Tip 11) Have fun

Don't have to feel silly by your lack of knowledge and don't think a question is foolish.
